Published September 5, 2022
High-end and well-designed office chairs are known for their durability. However, as long-lasting as they may be, it can become faulty after a few years of frequent use.
There are several reasons why your office chair keeps sinking. Two common causes are either the gas strut may be defective, or the adjustment lever is not operating as it should.
But regardless of the reason, sitting in an office chair that keeps sinking is one of the most terrible things that can happen. It can be uncomfortable and annoying, especially if you are in the middle of an important job.
While you can always buy and replace your old office chair, furniture nowadays is quite expensive. That’s why it is essential to know some DIYs or quick fix tips to fix a sinking office chair.
How To Fix A Sinking Office Chair With A Hose Clamp

Step 1: Expose the Cylinder
The first step in the hose clamp method is to slide the plastic skirt off the cylinder. The cylinder is the metal pipe that connects the wheels to the seat.
Most office chairs have a plastic tube over the cylinder for protection from damage or dirt. Slide the plastic tube until you can see the metal cylinder underneath.
Step 2: Adjust the Chair to Your Preferred Height
Adjust the chair to the height that you desire. This method gives fixed and permanent results. So, you must make sure you have set the right height as you won’t be able to alter the height after repair.
It is recommended that the seat of the chair should be level with your knees when you are standing. This is to ensure that you will be comfortable enough even after sitting for long periods.
There are two ways in adjusting the chair to your preferred height:
- First, if the chair won’t steady when you slide it up, then you will need to lay it on its side. Only then, you can push the chair to your preferred desired height.
- Second, if the plastic skirt covers the cylinder, then you will need to remove the skirt first by turning the chair upside down. Then, you can now push the retaining clip at the base with a screwdriver and pull off the wheels, then the skirt. Once done, slide the wheels back on.
Step 3: Wrap the Hose Clamp Around The Cylinder
Get a hose clamp or a jubilee clip to wrap around the cylinder. The usual size of a hose clamp to repair an office chair is around two centimeters.
To apply the hose clamp, loosen its screw and slowly pull out the belt end. Wrap the clamp around the metal cylinder, but do not tighten the clamp yet.
Step 4: Tighten the Clamp
After wrapping the clamp, you need to make sure that the clamp fits well around the cylinder before you tighten. Once you are sure that it is tight and stable enough, slowly tighten the grip of the clamp.
Remember, the clamp holds the entirety of your weight, so tighten as much as you can around the cylinder. The tighter it is, the better the result will be.
To have a neat and more professional-look office chair, clean the cylinder of any grease or dirt, then wrap it with duct tape.
How To Fix An Office Chair That Keeps Sinking With A PVC Pipe

The PVC method of fixing the office chair is kind of similar to the hose clamp method. However, some people prefer the PVC pipe method for extra safety.
Step 1: Measure the Cylinder of the Chair
Measuring the diameter of the cylinder will help you determine the size of the PVC pipe you will need to buy. Keep in mind that you need to get the measurement while the chair is in the position of the height that you desire.
Step 2: Cutting the PCV Pipe
Cut the pipe with the same height that you preferred your chair to have. In this step, it is recommended to wear protective gear. The PCV pipe contains harmful particles that are released when you cut it.
Step 3: Placing the Pipe to the Cylinder of the Chair
Once you are done cutting lengthwise, you should now have a pipe with a long slit that will run from top to bottom. An opening will be available to snap the PVC pipe on the cylinder of the chair.
After placing the pipe against the cylinder, the tube pipe will hold the seat from sliding down when you sit on it.
Once you are done fixing your office chair, you can now test it and enjoy your office chair that you are very fond of. But remember, whatever method you will use, you should be very keen on the instructions to have the best results.
